New 8HD question #1

Post by 2ManyKeys »

As noted in another post I need to verify everything is well with this eBay 8HD rather quickly so apologies in advance for a few questions like this that I normally should take the time to research.

Newb question #1

I have noticed that sometimes when I adjust the front panel filters and then move on to a different patch, the subsequent patches are effected by what I was doing to the last one. That seems strange. I expect the synth to load up a subsequent patch exactly as it was saved regardless if what I did with the previous patch.

Is that normal?

Thanks,

Scott

Yes, unfortunately it happens on mine too. Hit and hold the 'stop' button (from sequencer area) after loading a new program as it will reset the controllers.

Wasn't there a setting in the global settings that prevents this? That it resets the controllers every time you load another patch?

I saw that. I don't know where it was set prior to me setting defaults. Maybe that will fix it.

I'm honestly somewhat puzzled as to what reason there would be for NOT resetting the controllers with each patch load.

That doesn't fix it. If I mess with filter controls while playing, that carries over to any voice selected after that. Seems a rather dumb design choice or possibly a bug. I would have thought they would have fixed a bug so obvious. I assume this behavior is standard for everyone's Fusion?

It always goes back to the default settings when yo chance a patch/program that is why I write down the settings I changed for a reference if I like the changes to the settings I made :)

Indeed. The settings revert as soon as you change programs.

If you want to save that modified Program, you MUST save out the program to

another location on the HD - User/Favourites or whatever . .

Remembering of course that the ROM Programs cannot be modified to the ROM.

Also remember that if you modify a program that is already HD-Resident,

(Banks you have bought-in for instance) . . . and then SAVE it,

it WILL overwrite the original . . .

So save to a different BANK . . . . .

Then all you have to do is REMEMBER you edited it, and WHERE you saved it

Chris,

So then if you bring up a program and fiddle with the filter controls and then switch to another program does the 2nd program still sound modified?

I'm still puzzled by this behavior.

If you touch any of the controls with a Program displayed, a little <Edit> icon immediately appears on the top line of the display - showing it has been edited . . .

Unless you save it somewhere, it will revert (the edit will be lost) when you move to another program . .

You, the user HAS to initiate the <save> by using the <edit> <store> menus. . . . . . .

At least that is my understanding of how it works

I get that. My problem is that messing with those controls and moving to another preset without saving, seems to cause that preset to respond to the same control changes. Drummond noted that pressing and holding STOP fixes that and indeed it does. Still seems rather strange.

Have you got the latest OS installed?

I don't know whether I'm getting mixed up with another synth, but wasn't this fixed in an update?

Yeah, it's running 1.24. I do have the "Reset controllers" option checked and when switching presets all the onscreen controllers return to 0 however the sound is still effected by the value of the filter controls.

The main problem seems to be when using the filter controls. My "solution" is to leave the control matrix set to the Assignable controls and just avoid realtime filter manipulation.

Just to rule out the last remote possibilities, I did a full OS 1.24 image update from CF. That all went normally. I already reformatted and cleaned up the drive. My load on the drive is pretty minimal at this point.

Still even after the OS update and the subsequent reset to defaults it acts the same as I described above. The on-screen filter cutoff, res, etc. knobs all return to zero when switching presets, but quite obviously the actual changes I made don't revert. For example, if I adjust the filter down to a low cutoff leaving only a low muddy sound, the following preset selected will also be cutoff and muddy until I hold down the STOP button as noted by Drummond. It would be a real pain without that controller-reset shortcut and I don't even know where that is in the manual.

I thought it might be dirty pots, but this board has seen little use and the pots all pass their tests in diagnostics mode and they don't jump values around randomly which might cause something like this.

On top of that dirty pots would cause the on screen knobs to jump around. They don't.

Finally it occurred to me that maybe there was some board revision that fixed this, but I have Rev B hardware which I believe is the latest.

Puzzled. Why are Drummond and I the only ones who notice this?

Strange.

I have noticed the same thing happens on my 8HD (OS 1.24 ; "Reset Knobs" checked in "Settings" menu) with the filter settings.

And no little <Edit> icon appears on the top line of the display when those filter settings are modfified.
