My Sound ROM Version is indeed 1.22 as I only updated the OS. However, according to the release notes, there weren't any improvements/changes made to the sound ROM in versions 1.23 or 1.24. I will get a CF card when they update the sound ROM, as there's no other way to update it.
And there are improvements to be made, as I noticed a couple of weird things in the ROM samples... create a new program and check out the Contrabass and Cello multisamples. They seem to be exactly the same from about middle C down. They're different in the upper register, but that's pretty lame if they chose to do that on purpose. Also, the Bass FX Slide Down sample is nice, but the Bass FX Slide Up doesn't slide up. I'm going a bit off topic here, and should submit these observations to Alesis.
That's true. You are not missing anything doing it without the card. Not updated rom since 1.22
It seems that 1.24 has some issues for some folks that 1.22 did not have. As stated a couple posts back. Which is a shame, seeing 1.24 only fixed the sync issue. But I personally haven't lost any functions with 1.24.
It is possible that it is tied to the use of song mode or mixes. For I have no issues and do not use those. I been only using program and VA, FM modes. I just got used to leaving those other modes alone for having issues when I did. Even though now I know that the issue when using them was a ram thing and not using combinations of heavey samples in one song or mix will keep those issues I had from occurring. And since then, I haven't gone back to them.
But this makes me wonder if some of the other issues of non responding knobs, and/or buttons, lights, and other malfunctions that cause the fusion to have to be sent in for repair are caused only when in song, sequencer, or mix modes.
Maybe we should have a thread to try and narrow it down.
There must be some users out there who do not use mix or song mode. And if we check with them to see if they all or most, have had none of those issues.
A simple survey which compares the issues with types of use. This may help to determine what is causing some issues. I have a feeling that defective fusions "as there are a number of them" are not all just manufacture fault, or weak parts etc....
But rather that some are caused from usages.
Does this spark any thought on this matter with anyone?
Or am I just shooting in the dark here?
One thing that adds to this thought/theory, is the fact that a few users have had to send their fusion back for the same things. I read a few times where someone is already on their 2nd or 3rd fusion after a short time. So maybe it is in the way they are used. Too many heavy sample songs, or other.
Things like extreme editing often, and not rebooting after many edits. Doing a lot of editing to a program and then walking away without saving it yet, and leaving it on for hours. Which keeps the hard drive working all that time.
Various other things like editing many programs, and saving, and never rebooting/turning power off.
And other things. You know what I am getting at here.
And a well thought out survey while using a few people here with vast knowledge of how the fusion is made up and works, may well turn up causes and effects that will end up helping to create 1.25 OS that will prolong the life of a given fusion.

In the old commercials, no one ever found out because they always ended up crunching them to get to the tootsie roll sooner!

Furthermore you have to keep in mind that the total amount of free space is reduced after formatting, since extra space is needed to store the actual file system structure (FAT tables, boot sector, etc).
Some time ago I posted that I was able to update / reinstall Fusion's firmware from the HD and seemed to be a surprise.
Maybe it is possible only in...
