I'm guessing that "what we have" is the last of the 1.x OSes - the one that fixes the really evil bugs that they haven't been able to even get an accurate angle on for six months. That would also explain why it overran its expected release date.

I suspect that now they have a codebase they're absolutely confident of, they can start adding features and functionality.

Banks

Post by LZ »

There are still a LOT of bugs not addressed. It almost doesn't seem worth upgrading at this point, at the risk of encountering more and/or different problems. I've already come up with some work-arounds thus far, I can't afford to discover a new problem in the middle of a gig.

The only things of moderate interest to me are:

[Feature #3 -- Improved response to MIDI Bank messages. It will now automatically respond to either Bank MSB or Bank LSB.]

does this fix the problem of "Illegal Bank" message when you have a song sending a bank message to a remote module that doesn't exist in the Fusion?

And not cutting off notes being played on the keyboard when the sequencer stops would be nice too. I hate it at the end of a song when I'm holding out a chord and it just cuts out abruptly because the sequencer reaches the end.

But these are minor.

Bug List

Post by LZ »

In June I posted the ones I've encountered at the following:

http://www.promusicproducts.com/forum/p ... php?t=1170

And that list doesn't even contain many of the more serious problems I've seen people post with clicks, "VENG Failed to load", CPU issues, etc. Just peruse the "technical issues and bugs" threads and you'll find plenty.

Plus, since then I've run into issues with songs rearranging themselves. Before a gig, I use Global>Item Explorer "Arrange" function to put my songs in order of the set list (since there is not playlist feature) so I can just push the "INC" button after each song to load the next. Works fine, except a couple times I did it at home before I left and found that when turning it off and back on, sometimes the songs weren't in the same order. So now I always do it at the gig, or recheck the order after a power cycle.

Presumably you're not expecting the mechanical problems to be fixed via an OS update...? Nonetheless, telling me which bugs you found in June doesn't answer my question, which was "which ones haven't been fixed?" You claimed that many of them haven't; I believe it's quite reasonable to ask you which ones still occur.

You say that (rather condescendingly I might add), but if you peruse the same area you will notice that quite a few of those issues have now been pinned down somewhat, and some found to be consequences of the way the Fusion works rather than bugs per se.

bugs

Post by LZ »

Sorry, didn't mean to come off condescending - that's the problem with text only, maybe I need to make better use of emoticons :D

Anyway, no - I certainly don't expect mechanical problems to be fixed with an OS update.

As for the rest of my list, since this is the first OS update since them, the only ones addressed are:

1) Midi timing issues/SMF import
2) Maybe the "Illegal Bank"/saving issue - thus the original reason for my post since it is not clear from the documentation if it addresses this problem.

As far as all the other posts - yes, many are related to hardware problems or improper file management, etc., but many have also been unanswered, and since I have not personally experienced some of them, I cannot determine which are bugs and which are not. I have experienced a lot of weird things working with the fusion, but have personally only listed the bugs that I could either replicate, or have experienced on enough occasions to feel confident that it was a bug.

Along these lines, it would be nice if Alesis had a list of known bugs so that we could determine which ones they recognize as bugs and know if they are going to be addressed at some later date.

Clarification

Post by LZ »

I guess I should clarify, I was mainly comparing my list in the post I listed to the release notes for this OS:

http://www.alesis.com/downloads/softwar ... _Notes.pdf

I was trying to determine if any of the fixes that they list address the issues in my post enough to make it worth updating since I've gotten things workable for now.

Re OS ver 1.23

Post by Valiant »

Hi,

I upgraded to OS ver 1.23 yesterday, and interestingly, I find the keyboard response improved, playing the Holy Grail Piano and the Fusion Suitcase (A-4). Until yesterday, I still preferred the playing my Roland XP-30 because it seemed more responsive to soft and hard playing, that is, better dynamics. After upgrading the OS on the Fusion yesterday, I now find that I get even better dynamic response when playing the Fusion, and am really delighted with this improvement. Especially, when I hit the keys hard, the above patches respond better, that is, noticeably louder sound.
I checked the velocity response setting after the upgrade in the Global menu, and found it remained unchanged at the value of 28. But the playing dynamics (the playing feel) on the above patches are clearly different to my ears.

Only, I don't see anything mentioned about that in the release notes with OS 1.23. Has anyone else had a this experience ?

yes, but more worryingly I have noticed that the Blueridge guitar sound is now almost unplayable without using a hammer to get the 'slur' sound. Playing at the velocity I did before I just get the harmonic sound.

The Global velocity setting also resets when the update is applied - push it up to around 50 (or where it feels right to you) and you should be fine.

[{Edit} - Sorry Guy, I just noticed you'd already noted this.]
Now let's think of a reason why it CAN be done...

Limited Testing of an SMF with the new OS

Post by blandis »

I spent a few minutes with an SMF that I had loaded under 1.22. This particular midi file had wildly-varying tempo changes. It was a barborshop quartet training piece with legato phrasing that would speed up and slow down. When imported into the Fusion, some of the extreme ritards at the end of phrases would be truncated, resulting in what sounded like missed beats and jumping right to the next measure. That is now fixed. As the file plays, the display for encoder 4 shows the tempo changes dipping all the way down to around 30 bpm, and time-wise it sounds right. Of course the audio parts I recorded are now all whacked out, as they were synced to the old timing, but that's OK, this was just some experimenting I was doing anyways, nothing lost. So I guess this was fixed with the 30-bpm tempo range extension listed on the release notes. Thanks Alesis. Hope to play around some more this weekend...
Cheers,
Bruce Landis

That's exactly the type of stuff I'm worried about. I have hard disc recordings and tempo changes that DO work properly now. If I update am I going to have to redo 60 sequences before my next gig, all to MAYBE fix a couple problems that I've already learned to live with?

I think I'll sit tight for a while and get feedback from those who upgrade first. If anybody can shed light on my "illegal bank" question above, I would appreciate it.

I had a sequence (although there were no audio tracks) on my hard drive that went out of sync with the old os.

When I updated and tried the sequence with the new os, it was still out of sync.

I transferred it again from the pc to the Fusion, and everything was synced perfectly.

As it was the Fusion itself that was allowing things to get out of sync, perhaps it would work ok if you backed up your Fusion to your computer, install new os, and then transfer your sequence back to the Fusion.
But logically, if your sequences were syncing ok before, then surely they should still sync after the os update.

If your sequences then went out of sync with the new os, you could always re-install os 1.22

You could also make a backup.
There are instructions in the OS download page.
