Converting other keyboards sounds to the Fusion

Post by Arevyn »

Hey everyone,

So Im wondering if its possible to convert the samples from other keyboards to samples and programs the fusion can use?

For example...I have an Alesis QS7.1 and I love a couple of the sounds out of it. I can't seem to find anything within the Fusion to duplicate that program. Is there anyway to get the sounds out of the QS and have it work the same way in the Fusion?

What about other Keyboards? I have a Nord Electro 2, If I were to get the WAV's or files from that, can they be converted? Perhaps with AWave, or Fusion Converter?

Any thoughts?

P.S. I'm not looking to sell anything nor to make these available obviously due to copyright issues (I'm not sure it would apply, but probably) But just for my own personal use, seeing as I already own the keyboards.

Hi Arevyn . .

It should be possible to do this - by various means . . .

It almost certainly requires a bit of understanding about how sampling works and how to assign samples across the keyboard to end up with a result that satisfies . . .

The Fusion itself CAN sample - and there is a tutorial of sorts in the Tutorial pack you can download from Alesis.com

The Fusion Converter (old) and the Latest Fusion Creator can also do this.

Check this thread for the location of Joeri Peeters Tutorial on Fusion Converter

http://www.promusicproducts.com/forum/p ... 978#p35978

The Creator does have an AutoSample feature which attempts to automate the process to a degree - but the last time I tried - It does not work - yet . . .

Doing it manually instead probably is possible, as it stands - but will be slow until you understand what is involved and how top proceed.

Another possibility is to check out Klause's site at backintimerecords.de just in case he has already done this for the QS7 amongst the MANY Banks he offers for the Fusion.

In all likelyhood, the samples will NOT be easy to get straight from the QS7 . . .

Understandably, most manufacturers prevent this for obvious reasons - the Fusion itself is no exception . . .

Be SURE to use COPIES of any wavs you use to create programs. There is no way to get the wavs back AFTER they have been converted to Fusion Samples, Multisamples . . .

You will almost certainly have to sample the Audio output from the QS7 in order to proceed.

The Fusion is slightly better in this respect as it has an S/PDif output (which I use to record my songs from - and works well). I see no reason why it should not work for sampling - though I have NOT tried this myself. - Although it's NOT the Fusion you want to sample :)

Hope some of that might help

Thanks so much Parametric! I appreciate the help.

Ive been pouring over BIT records and really love the sounds Im hearing there. Im debating on the grand pianos as well as the organs. I do love a good Hammond B3 like Greg Allman uses. That deep full sound is so hard to get and I could never get a sound I was happy with on the QS.

I notice on your posts and some of your recordings your a definite piano player...any thoughts on a good piano sound when playing with a band as opposed to solo piano stuff? Im thinking songs like "After the Goldrush" by Neil Young, or "Have I Told You Lately" by Van Morrison, "All Along The Watchtower" but only with guitar/Piano/Violin. I have a CP33 and although I love the piano out of it, it has never really meshed well with my band when we've played those songs.

Thanks so much!

Not really sure I could add anything meaningful . . . .

I've never played Keys in a Band, so all my own stuff is pure studio based . . . .

Piano sounds for stage and band need a lot of punch, so the frequencies in the mids and highs are mostly needed. This can be done with equalizers. Apart from intros and solo parts, dynamics don't play a very big role, less is more when you have to compete against a guitarist. The Alesis HG Piano is basically suitable for this. If you don't like its sound character, it's a Yamaha Grand Piano that was sampled there, then you'd best look for one with a completely different bite.
Rock´n Roll is music, not driving instructions.

What you use for your live sound system is critical-a piano has the widest range of frequencies of all typical band instruments-this requires a sound system up to the task in a live venue-I would never use a single speaker system again for my keys-I have dual 3-way 10" speakers with a 200-watt head that has parametric and graphic eq settings, and that is just barely adequate for all but small to medium-size venues. I never liked the idea of connecting through the house system directly-but if I did, I would still need a monitor system to make sure my piano is coming through the way it needs to. there's a reason the "money" piano guys used miked grands-it is very hard to get that huge sound with a digital-like KPR says-a full mid-range and cutting upper EQ, and even that is often not enough. Many venues soak up the delicate sounds of a piano, or in loud raw venues (a school gym or similar) your piano will sound like its made of tin!

B-3-check out Steve's Hollow Sun B-3's from his 2nd set of programs-volume 2 has a pretty realistic B3/C3 with some grit to it and mod wheel for fast/slow leslie. I just posted about one in particular. again-to get the huge acoustic soundfield of a real leslie-a stereo PA setup helps. And good to annoy the guitar player, since he'll never think he's in tune if he can hear you too easily....yes I've been fun to work with in a group.

Very good input from KPR & JD

Hmmm, parametric settings, what do you think about that Chris :)
