Damaged Fusion display - anyone knowledgeable about these?

Post by droolmaster0 »

So, I got a Fusion again (sold my first one, but regretted it) - this one through ebay. As the guy said - it was in pristine condition, but the guy who packed it for him know nothing about packing up a synth. There was very little padding on the top - and sure enough the display is damaged. It looks like something hit it in the metal area near the upper right of the display - the only cosmetic damage that I can find is right there - looks like a nice little scratch/nick. That in itself isn't that troublesome - but also in the upper right corner of the display is a very bad discoloration, that can be seen even with the unit powered off. When on, it almost looks like a 'flower' reaching out from the upper right - white in the center, yellow and green as it gets to the edges. Someone asked me to press on the screen to see if there was discoloration, but pressing on it has no effect. The discolored portion is unreadable, making most of the right hand portion of the display unreadable. A friend, who hasn't seen it, thought that it was possible that something is just disconnected inside - that's the optimistic view. Anyone familiar with what these symptoms might mean, whether (if a new display is needed) Alesis would send parts and instructions, or whether they would require it to be send to them, or a certified repair person?

if you can see the discolouration whilst the fusion is off then it is physically damaged

To clarify - obviously there is physical damage of some sort- the question is whether there is something loose inside, or whether the display itself is damaged. Are you saying that because you can see the discoloration while the Fusion is off, that the display itself is damaged?

If you can see blooming in the display I would say almost 100% that the panel is damaged - it is possible to crack the display and it not been seen from the front side

can you send a picture of it when its powered?

Unfortunately, no camera. But, you are confirming my fears. I can't talk to Alesis until next week - anyone know if they will ship out parts with schematics, etc, or whether they require it to be sent to them? This is the unpleasant scenario of convincing the seller ( who sold at a great price) to throw lots of money into this, but so far he seems receptive.

Hmm well ive seen a lot of broken LCD panels and your describing a damaged one - you should not be able to see anything at all when its off - if you can something is wrong and its sounds like the panel has received a blow - enough maybe to crack it internally or break the edge seal - anyway sounds bad !

good luck - if your stuck let me know we may even be able to find another source online - I would have guessed it is a standard LCD panel part

I'd go back to the seller. It was his responsibility to make sure that it was packed properly. Even if you had bought shipping insurance, they wouldn't pay out because it wasn't packed properly. You bought a synth sold as in "pristine condition." I wouldn't accept a broken one for the same price.

The seller thus far seems willing to pay completely for a repair, including shipping to Alesis if necessary. Of course, I'll see what actually transpires...I don't think he wants bad feedback, and a big fight on his hands. He seems like a nice guy, who got someone else to pack the synth...who didn't know the slightest thing about packing a fragile instrument. I'm hoping it will go the repair route - I got a good price on it, and playing it again reminds me of the fact that I'd really like to have one. I got a good price - $499 shipped - and I think it would be hard to find one at that price again unless I really lucked out.

should be simple - screws/nuts to hold the display in place and should be on a plug/skt lead - though ive not seen inside a fusion to confirm

Spoke to Alesis and they are willing to send me the schematics, and sell me the part (I hope it's obvious which one it should be...). In any case, I'll show the schematic to my friend so he can determine whether he can do it, and then (if so) I can have them send me the part and I can proceed from there. So, maybe I can get this thing back in shape in a couple of weeks.

Can you scan that schematic and post it up on the internet? hey changing that lcd should be as easy as changing a 9 volt battery. But I have a hard time with 9 volt batteries.
