Hard Disk not detected

Post by Almerick »

Hi Guyz!

Just bought a new (rather a demo model) 6HD, loving it so far.Only problem is that whem I tried to upgrade the OS,XP could not open my drive, gave me the "Please insert a disk into Drive" error.I thought it was PC related but then noticed that the Fusion HD does not appear in the Fusion Media section.Has thia happened to anyone before,is the new disk faulty?

Any help would be appreciated

Thanx

1. What size hard disk did you install, max size for Fusion is 128 GB?

2. The hard disk drive must be formatted using the Fusion Hard Disk Drive format utility on the Fusion.

3. Are you using a CF card to update Fusion OS to version 1.24?

So you have had it working initially? Played the presets?

If YES - then the disk was fine

I'm not understanding what you mean here.

Have you bought a NEW HD, opened the Fusion, removed the original HD and tried to install it?

If YES - then the FIRST thing to do is to power the Fusion ON - and Format the drive using the Fusion's own utility. DO not format the drive in Windows.

[BEFORE SWAPPING THE DISKS - you should have backed the original HD up to your PC - so that you can copy BACK any extra banks that MAY have been loaded on the original Hard Disk . . . .To your NEW HD]

The way to connect the Fusion to you PC is:
Have your PC up and running.
Power on the Fusion.
Connect the usb lead to the Fusion
Connect the other end of the usb lead to the PC
The Fusion_HD should now appear in <My Computer> and the Fusion's Display will show that it is usb connected.
You can now copy Programs/Banks TO and FROM the Fusion_HD
When you are done - you need to <safely remove device> and unmount the Fusion_HD - this may take several attempts with XP
When the Drive is unmounted from your PC - The Fusion Reboots automatically.
You then need to go into the Global menu and VERIFY ALL items shown (Songs, Programs, mixes etc)

The STRUCTURE of the Fusion's HD and its filing system is CRITICAL to the Fusion's operation.

Definately, DO NOT move folders around or rearrange things in any way on the Fusion_HD using the PC. You won't exactly break anything, but voices and Banks may well disappear unexpectedly if you do this without knowing what you are doing.

Things CAN be done this way BUT You need to be very familiar with the Fusions Filing system if you are not to screw things up.

Detailed info on the Filing system IS available - but not in the Manuals . . . .

Best Idea is to go here http://www.promusicproducts.com/forum/p ... 801#p32409 and download the .pdf.

Follow the instructions to reinstall the OS.

YOU NEED TO HAVE A 2GB CF card and a card reader/writer on your PC to complete this.

Let us know how you get on . . .

Hi Parametric!

Sorry for my bad explanation,I meant my Fusion is new. I did not buy another hard drive at all.The Fusion does not detect the default built-in drive under media, neither can I store anything on the harddrive when trying to. I can hear it spinning up and stopping when I power up/switch off but other than that I can't access it,neither on the fusion nor from a PC.When I hook it up via usb,the fusion does indicate it is connected via usb but on the pc the fusion harddrive appears as no media under disk management.I'm gonna buy a cf card today and use that to upgrade the software but I would surely love to use my harddrive as well.

Thank you for your assistance.

Hi Almerick,

Sounds like the OS has become "scrambled" somehow. if you get a CF card and follow that .pdf to reinstall the OS, it should be fine.

Consensus is that the Fusion can deal with up to a 4GB CF. an 8GB or larger will not work.

Once the HD has been formatted by the Fusion, all should be well, and it should the appear in <my computer> as Fusion_HD.

good luck

EDIT [ Once the HD is up and running, connecting to the PC is the means by which you can install the plethora of free (and bought) Banks that are available.
The free stuff has been archived in several places, which we can point you at once your Fusion is "Happy". KPR and Joeri Peeters are still actively writing new Banks of Programs for the Fusion - so it is very much ALIVE in this respect]

Hi Guyz!

Still no luck unfortunately, not even able to upgrade the OS of my 6HD. I bought a new 4GB CF card, plugged it into the 6HD and connected to my pc via usb, which was detected. I continued to unzip (on my pc) the v124 OS image. Copied the bin file across to the CF card, safely removed from the pc, then on the 6HD, went into global, system, upgrade, selected the CF card as source, then load. It then proceeds to validate the code image file (takes a while), then I ran into this error: "Not enough free space on ROM" Error code <0x03000029>. Also when I try to access song mode I get this error: <SEng not operational> error code: <0x08000007>. The song mode error I have noticed a few days ago already before trying to upgrade. Is there a way to backup, wipe and reinstall the entire OS/Rom section or is that not advised? I have made a backup of the volume section as per the pdf but then again, from what I saw that only backs up the user data and I have not been able to save anything as yet.

Thank you for your assistance!

With the Fusion turned off while pressing the record and play buttons turn on the Fusion, this will re-initialize the Fusion
Next
Turn the Fusion off then insert the CF card with the os bin file, while pressing the B and 7 keys turn on the Fusion and follow on screen directions

So......I successfully managed to re-initialize the Fusion and upgrade the OS, following your instructions Jesse, thank you so much for that!!! Unfortunately, I'm back at square one, my harddrive is still not detected under media or on a pc :( . I suppose my two options are...either take it back to the store as it only a week or so old and have them get it sorted under warranty...but I can't stand the thought of not having it around for however long it'll take to get fixed, second option is to take it apart and test the harddrive on my pc as it is IDE from what I researched, maybe even plug my pc drive in and test that, downside to this option is, if the drive is fine and for some bizarre reason it's another component like the pcb etc, I will void my warranty once opening it up! What to do, what to do, any more ideas guyz? I'm stunned!

Thank you for your help thus far!

Hi Almerick,

You should not be having to jump through hoops to make this work.

As its only a week old - I would definitely take it back and let it be someone else's headache to sort it out.

It is not acceptable for a new product NOT to work properly.

You are in the best position to get this sorted - and at NO COST to you.

Agreed - its a bummer to be without it for a while - since you're clearly anxious to get acquainted with the beast - but you don't want to get a partial fix and have it all go wrong when your just out of guarantee.

It could be a dodgy board in there - and they cost £100s - best let them sort it. (IMO)

This far down the road - I guess it will have to be a repair - as I doubt there are many (or even any) brand new Fusions out there . . . The Fusion has been "legacy" for some time now.

EDIT [DID YOU REMEMBER TO FORMAT THE HD USING THE FUSION'S UTILITY? (<Global>/<Media>/<HD>/<Format>) - The PC won't see it if its not formatted]

Best Regards

Hi Parametric!

No, unfortunately I could not format the HD using the Fusion utility as the Fusion does not even detect the HD. I sent it in to the store today so hoping for the best, will keep you guyz posted.

Excellent news. Perhaps the HD IS faulty - it would explain much.

Anyway - its their problem now - (hurrah!)

Good luck for a successful outcome.

Hi Guyz!

I got my 6HD back yesterday from the shop! :D Turns out that the Harddrive was faulty, so they replaced it with a new one! It now displays under Global>Media, I'm yet to test whether it's detected on a pc but I'm sure it would this time round!

Thank you for all your advice and help, now the fun starts!

That's a great result Al . . . .

and at no cost to you . . . . :D

I'm sure the PC will now SEE the Fusion_HD now - no problem, and you can start loading up the freebees from HollowSun etc.

As you say, now the fun starts.

Your gonna have an interesting time. . . .
