Wow that is bad-my one 8HD has the old supply-still working, been testing its temp-working out how to add more heat sinks on it-I have a aluminum 1/8" x 1" x 12" length-with the right drill bits, screws, I have mini thread cutters-I am going to fabricate my own pieces to add to this supply-it doesn't seem to run terribly hot-and I drilled 1/2' vent holes in the end cap just in case. For moderate home use, I think it will hold up-but for a gig, rather have the better supply. Designing one from scratch-might have to look at that option again, I know ther'd been some discussion here about the feasibility of this-looks pretty difficult. I don't know of any desktop computer supplies that have the 16V taps, that would be the hardest part, that and something that would fit in this space. The other option-find a manufacturer that can fabricate/duplicate this supply-if they are willing to do a small run, might worth the investment for a few of these. I'll do some more research, see if i can come up with something.

Possible ways to increase cooling to power supply.

One is to attach some copper tubing to the fingers on the heat sink as long as air flow around the tube can be maintained.

Another would be to attach some thin strips of sheet copper to the fingers.

An another would be to add a small thin mini fan on top of (or maybe under if it is thin enough) the heat sink.

I was just looking at some pics of the inside of a Fusion 6HD and I noticed where the fan that is supposed to help cool down the PSU was located, it's pushed farther away from the PSU than in the 8HD due to the location of the HDD.

If the HDD in the 6HD was replaced with a smaller SSD you could probably move the fan closer to the PSU this would be a plus for the 6HD :)

Wow, no wonder the 6HD's overheat. Right Jesse, there is room for improvement there. Looking at this...I can't see how this fan is cooling the supply at all-since it looks almost completely blocked by the hard drive-which itself generates heat-the IC boards in these large drives get warm. I know because I've had a few IC boards that burned out and caused the hard drive to fail, the chips on the boards get warm. Almost as if Alesis designed the fan to cool the hard drive, not the power supply, which is not quite right. Definitely needs a modification-its excellent there is so much info right here as to how to do many of these things.

Another thing about the fan, it's a 12 volt PC fan and Alesis connected it to a 5 volt line which means it does not move as much air as it could :(

This was probably done to make it more quiet, I have thought about switching it over to a 12 volt line.

I am sure it is possible to purchase a whisper quiet fan to go in there :)

Tearing a few old laptops apart-I knew i should have kept some parts-as these have very compact "pancake" types of motors for keeping the CPU's cool, and are pretty powerful-I've just had an Asus Eee tablet apart to add ram-and as flat as it is, it has such a fan-probably 5V. Also an HP Elitebook-one of the slimmest laptops I've ever seen, And it too-managed to squeeze an almost completely flat fan in there! Might be an alternative way to add one of these fans without sucking out too much power. At some point, I might take a look at some of the laptop fan "parts" posted on eBay and elsewhere for older laptops' repairs-and do a bit of experimenting-when I can get myself to tear one of my fusion's tops off-again! There isn't much spare room in the 6HD-but i bet I could cram one in the 8HD. These fans even have integral miniature ducted ports to vent air out the side of a laptop, I've had quite a few, should have kept at least one for parts.

and then there is this.....

Which is what I found inside 2 newer laptops I've had to restore. Unbelievable miniaturization-let's slap one of these in our Fusions! (only kidding I know our antique buss would have no idea what this thing is!!) Too bad though-that would open up that power supply space a bit I bet....

Jesse-do you think it might be worthwhile to get in touch with this gentleman re our power supplies if your friend is unable to create one? He is UK-based, maybe parametric knows of him already.

I registered over at Sound-on-Sound's website/user group and and came across this in one of their posts about the Alesis Fusion, from 2021, not overly old posts. Just an overly old poster boy here (me).

I directed those Fusion owners at that group here, letting them know how you, chris and others are keeping the Fusions alive in 2022 (its still 2022 isn't it???) The more I look over reviews of the most recent monster workstations, the more I see the merits of keeping the Fusions.

I've been for example-creating several very good sounding (IMO) backing tracks quickly-just using the mix and arpeggio settings. Amazing how full even 4 parts can sound-and just with the factory preset aprpeggios for basslines, drum tracks etc. and I laugh (ha-ha) when i read about the newest workstations bragging about their 1) sampling capabilities 2) VA simulations 3) FM implementation and 4) wave-sequencing/granular synthesis. As if this is something new and wonderful. Not. not for us (ha-ha!-sorry duplicate ha-ha  )
