Re: ALESIS MultiMix 8 USB FX dubbing

I found this post on GearSpace . . . . . concerning the MOTU 2408 interface.

The Mk1 used phono's (RCAs) but the Mk2 moved to 1/4" TRS and I believe configurable -10dBa/+4dBa

They are connectable using the Fusion's ADAT (lightpipe?) Socket . . .

Though somewhat old - they ARE quite cheap "used" . . . . .

I believe this has been mentioned before in here somewhere
Fusion is a rather amazing machine, even in 2019, and indeed has some cool tricks up it's sleeve as noted.

I found a great fix/expansion for the Fusion. Losing the output board is not unheard of. Apparently Alesis used a design similar to the Ion with output muting FET transistors that could be killed with static discharge. DON'T connect audio cables while your Fusion is on.

The fix, which doesn't even require opening the Fusion, simply requires the purchase of an old MOTU 2408 and an optical cable. The Fusion can pump 8 digital channels out on its ADAT output and the 2408 will happily accept these 8 channels and simultaneously pump them out of it's 8 analog outputs. Now you have a Fusion with 8 inputs and 8 outputs!

The 2408 mk1 used 20 bit converters and a very clean design internally, however the outputs are all RCA connectors. The 2408 mk2 upgraded to 24 bit converters (like anybody could tell the difference) and moved to balanced 1/4" jacks. The 2408 requires no computer configuration in it's standalone mode. If the internal (easily replaceable) battery dies it will forget your selection for the input and sample rate, otherwise it remembers these settings when it powers up.

This is also a great way of taking the internal effects busses and feeding them to really nice external effects. Indeed, the dedicated Alesis (Wavefront) effects chips in the Fusion are not bad but they are not it's high point. That was a surprising design decision considering the cool effects they had already done in the Quadraverb 2/Q20. I think they were simply trying to save money in the effects section. But hey... dedicated effects chips never eat into polyphony!

The 2408's mk1 and mk2 are very cheap these days so it's a great way to fix a Fusion with dead outputs or to expand the outputs on any Fusion.

As for the power supply, the best way to increase life span is to replace the internal drive with a PATA SSD. The SSD only uses 5V which frees up the 12V rail on the power supply and significantly reduces the supply heat dissipation. This won't be much faster (if any) due to limitations on the Fusion's drive interface but it will be much more reliable than a spinning hard drive.
