9Etherian's Setup

Post by 9Ether »

Hi all. Just wanted to give you guys a view of my workspace. In addition to my Fusion 8HD, I have an Ibanez SR506 bass guitar. I've really enjoyed recording it into the Fusion. It has really added more life to my music. The Line6 bass amp I bought with it has really cool synth bass capabilities built into it. For monitoring I'm using a pair of Event Tuned Reference 6 monitors, and Beyerdynamics DT770 headphones. To interface with my PowerBook G4 running Logic Pro 6.4.3, I'm using an M-Audio Audiophile USB interface.

The set which I am simple, and is very good

I have used Audiophile USB before,
Other than there not being a direct monitor function, it was good by good sound quality.

Your little set-up is like a breath of fresh air to me. Small, simple, yet funcional. I'm almost there myself. But, I still want another board. A Korg Karma. Oh, well. Thanks for sharing the pics.

Hey. Glad my little setup is inspiring others. I'd like to maintain a simple setup, but I want to add a few items in the future that will make my work flow a bit easier. I plan to invest in an electronic drum kit and possibly an MPC for sequencing. I'll keep you guys posted. Thanks again for the complements.

Update

Post by 9Ether »

I had a few request for updated pictures of my home studio to show the Yamaha DTXtreme III Standard electronic drum kit I bought. I am really excited about this addition, because it gives my music the organic, real-time feel I'm looking for.

Last night, after I unpacked and setup everything I re-visited all the songs I had stored in my Fusion. I deleted all the drum sequences, and replaced them with live drums. What I learned is that I absolutely suck at drums. My timing is horrible, but it sounded fantastic in the mix. Last year, I was impressed with my music when I added live bass to it. This year, I am absolutely floored by the sound of live drums and bass.

I had to rearrange everything you see in the previous photos, so I could get my drum module close enough to the Fusion to record into it. I could only record onto a single channel due to the fact that I only had one cable that could run from the Xtreme to the Fusion.

The drum module samples, and has six separate outs for recording. Five outputs are for bass drum, snare, toms, hi-hat, and Cymbals. The sixth out can be used to output sound from the internal tone generator, or output sound from an external source. In other words I can use the module as an effects processor.

Thanks. I appreciate your interest in hearing some of my music. Its inspiring when people take a genuine interest in experiencing other peoples creativity. I'm working on some stuff right now. I have some completed material I did exclusively in Logic, but I'd like to post a Fusion based production for this forum. I have some recorded a few new ideas into the Fusion, but nothing complete yet. Hopefully I can post something soon.

My finger drumming often times left me a bit disappointed and frustrated, because I could never get the feel I was looking for. Now, with these drums I hope to overcome this limitation.

My bass playing is coming along, but I still have much to learn. Before post any music I'd like to tighten up my bass and drum playing as well as improve the tone I get from my bass. (I'm inspired every time I touch that thing. I just love my six string!)

I know what you mean. I have a lot of songs that I don't think are up to par just yet. I just bought a guitar today and I absolutely love the thing, but not in an idolatry kind of way. But I really like it. Hopefully a bass will be the next big thing for me. I took it out of the box around 5pm and I've been playing on it long enough for my fingers to turn black from the strings. It came with a tutorial DVD and it's absolutely great. Here's the package I bought: http://www.squierguitars.com/products/s ... 0301600032
Not to babble on, I'm just very excited about my new purchase. I don't think I was this excited when I bought my car. I'll post a pic soon. By the way, what bass do you recommend to a complete beginner?

I'm slowly working up to a system very similar to yours. Bass, guitar, mic, 2 Fusions, and electronic drums all hooked up together as cleanly and with minimal external gear as possible. I'm looking at either the MOTU 828 mk3 or a TC electronics Konnekt Live and an Alesis USB drum kit which comes with BFD lite.

Bass guitar is my rock forte, but the Fusions will be the center of my studio. Glad to see another Fusion user who is a bass guitar and drummer as well...

Dave.

Congrats on your new guitar. And I look forward to seeing pics of your studio. I was a complete beginner and started with a 6-string. Some start with a 4-string. Still others with a 5-string. The most common is a 4-string though. When I bought my six string bass strung BEADGC, my intentions where to buy a second 6-string and restring it as a "piccolo bass". A piccolo bass has the same tuning as a regular guitar EADGBE but just one octave lower. That way, I wouldn't have to adjust to the differing scale lengths on the guitar and bass. If you don't need the extended range, and can afford it, I would suggest the Ibanez SR500. This is an excellent sounding bass. My second choice would be an Ibanez GSR200. Good Luck.

psi.

You have the right idea. Having actual instruments to play is so much better than trying to manipulate samples. I know the samples will sound better, but I can perform it better than midi can. Also, since I've been playing everything live, without quantization, my music sounds better more organic. When you get the drum kit you'll like the expressiveness of your drum beats. I'm definitely with you on removing the unnecessary gear. Computers are cool, but man do they get in the way. Anyways, Good Luck.
